Estheticians know how you look on the outside influences how you feel about yourself on the inside. Facials are one way to look radiant. As an esthetician, it is an important part of your work, and providing a relaxing experience for clients helps them reboot. Let’s look at the important ways an esthetician can provide customers with an amazing facial experience and use continuing education for estheticians to expand their repertoire.
What an Esthetician Needs
Clients expect and demand a clean environment when they get a facial. So, it is up to you to make sure that happens. Surfaces should be sterilized between clients, and all instruments should be cleaned in an autoclave. Don’t hesitate to schedule clients far enough apart to make sure this is done. Changing rooms should be clean and stocked with fresh towels.
Put Your Best Foot Forward
Make sure your attire says you are a professional. The way you comport yourself, from the clothes you wear to your posture, is important. Make sure your hands are clean, your fingernails are short, and your hair is pulled back. Think of what you would expect from an esthetician giving you a facial, and you won’t go wrong.
Take Time for an Adequate Consultation
At the start, get to know your clients. Ask what they expect from the facial and what is important for them. Perhaps use a questionnaire, so you have a working knowledge of their diet, how much water they consume, and what medications and vitamins they take. All of this has a huge impact on the skin. Ask whether they smoke, for that too affects the skin. The type of treatment you use will be dictated by the answers they provide. Remember, your clients are looking to you for suggestions on what they can do to look better.
Getting Ready For the Facial
Once the client is comfortable, provide a wrap they can wear during the facial. Give them a few moments while they change. Make sure the wraps are washed after use by each client. Use fresh towels or a wide headband to cover their hair.
Cleansing the Skin
The first step involves cleansing the skin. This is done with small cotton pads or sponges. Analyze your client’s skin to see what skin type she has. A bright light with a magnifying glass built in works best. Make sure to cover the client’s eyes before doing this. It is important to see if the client has blackheads, age spots, or dehydration of the skin while you are doing this part of the procedure. After the analysis is complete, choose the best products for your client.
Steaming Away Impurities
Depending on the client’s skin type and sensitivity, you may wish to use a steam vapor to get rid of impurities and loosen blackheads. Steam may not be the best choice for clients with sensitive skin.
Exfoliation and Extraction
There are different types of exfoliant. Mild chemical and manual exfoliants can be used during the application of steam. Stronger chemical peels are not done at the same time as the steam. Extractions are a procedure performed to remove blackheads and whiteheads. Watch your client carefully to make sure she is not uncomfortable during this phase.
Massage and Mask
The client’s face benefits greatly from massage, relaxing the muscles and helping blood reach the surface. This stimulates the skin to provide a healthy glow. Next, a facial mask is applied. While the mask conditions your client’s skin, stay with them, perhaps applying a gentle massage to the scalp.
After the facial is done, stay and provide your client with a list of products you feel will benefit her skin type. Advise the client on a daily skin-care regimen. Generally, having the client return once a month works out best.
When you have a day off or even time between clients, educate yourself on new methods and ways to improve your skill set when it comes to providing the best facial for customers. Not only will your experience level widen but your clients will appreciate the knowledge you bring after taking continuing education for estheticians.
