Maybe you’re not quite satisfied in your current job, but aren’t sure exactly what you want to do. Remember the old saying, “A person who does what she loves for a living never works a day in her life.” Of course, that doesn’t mean a person pursuing a passion doesn’t work and work hard. It does mean that all that effort doesn’t seem like work because you enjoy it. If you’re creative, love making people beautiful and feeling good about themselves, consider that you’ll be happy making a career change to cosmetology. Trust the universe to give you some signs.

You know you have talent if friends are always asking you to make them pretty.
People Love Your Look
If your friends are constantly complimenting you on your hair or makeup, and ask for tips, that’s a sign you may have what it takes to launch a cosmetology career. If perfect strangers come up and admire your style, that’s even more evidence you should consider a career change.
You’re the Go-to Person
Do your friends ask you to help them with their hair, whether it’s getting primped for a big date or ensuring that a home dye job turns out well? Do friends ask you for direction or advice when they’re contemplating a change in hairstyle or makeup? Do you often have more fun helping friends prepare hair and makeup for a party than you do attending the party itself? If you’re the go-to person for your friends when it comes to hair and an overall look, why not make a career of it?
Plays Well With Others
A good cosmetologist needs the right personality to practice her art successfully. Do you enjoy spending time with others, listening to their concerns about their appearance, and probably other aspects of their lives? A warm, friendly personality is a good attribute for the future cosmetologist, but you must also have the ability to keep your cool if the day gets a bit stressful.
It’s All in the Details
Do you have a sharp eye for even the smallest details? Do you notice every little thing about a person, and think that a particular change in hair and makeup could make the individual much more attractive? If it’s important to you that everything looks just right – no hair out of place, as the saying goes – you have the makings of a good cosmetologist.

It won’t take long before you’re in a fulfilling career.
Getting Started as a Cosmetologist
Every state has its own requirements for eligibility to take a cosmetology licensing exam. These include minimum ages, a number of classroom and apprenticeship hours, and the grade needed to pass. In some states, you must have a high school diploma or GED, while in other states that is not a prerequisite for becoming a cosmetologist. You can take cosmetology classes in a bricks-and-mortar school or online. If you must continue to work in your previous field while studying to become a cosmetologist, online classes are probably the most convenient.
