Thanks to the internet, getting a cosmetology education is more accessible than ever. With both online cosmetology classes and in-person schools available, aspiring cosmetologists have options. But in both cases, prospective students should make sure to research whether the program is reputable and should request information or a tour if applicable. While they have that in common, there are a few key differences to consider:
Class Size
At a traditional, in-person cosmetology school, you may encounter large class sizes. While this means you will meet more people in your industry, it may also lead to less one-on-one attention from your instructor. An online cosmetology class on the other hand, will likely have a smaller class size and more personalized education.
Affiliation With Salons
Many in-person programs are affiliated with salons or specific brands. This can be beneficial in that in theory, you’re more likely to get hired by this brand or salon after you graduate. But for some aspiring cosmetologists, this can be limiting in that you’re learning a company’s specific method and may have to use their products exclusively. Online courses may offer you more freedom in this area.
Convenience
This is the biggest differentiator. If you have a family or are a single parent, you may not have the time in your day to commute to an actual school. The hours of classes may not be compatible with yours or your children’s schedule. Online cosmetology classes can be taken at your own pace, whenever and wherever is most convenient to you.
Price
Odds are, your choice to become a cosmetologist is so you can make more money and pursue your passion. While the old adage says it “takes money to make money,” you don’t want to overspend on education when trying to launch your new career. An online cosmetology school tends to have a lower tuition than a traditional in-person program. This is because brick and mortar locations have more overhead they need to cover than a digital program. You also save money on gas or other transportation costs if you choose to work from home through an online school. As mentioned earlier, if you have children, you’re also saving on care costs and babysitters if you’re able to complete lessons at home.
Time
While traditional schools tend to have a set timeline for completion of your program, there’s more flexibility with online schools. This can be particularly useful if you already have your license and your state requires you to take ongoing education classes.
