2016 is here, and the arrival of the new year makes an excellent time to set those career goal resolutions. Cosmetology continues to be a top choice for both primary and secondary careers since it affords flexibility in time and location, an ever-expanding client base, and the potential to be a small-business owner shortly after finishing school.
If you’ve considered changing your career to cosmetology, make 2016 the year it happens.
The Basics
First of all, you’ll want to look at the licensing requirements for the state you live in. Cosmetologists practice under a license issued once certain educational, testing, and training requirements have been met.
You’ll also want to prepare yourself for the commitment to furthering your education in pursuit of a new career. Consider finding a beauty school that allows you to access training on a flexible schedule, so that you can continue to meet your other obligations while getting your training.
Make the commitment
That being said, it’s important to recognize that you’ll have to set a routine for yourself while in school that makes sure you have plenty of time to dedicate to your studies. If you can, designate a home office space or other quiet space where you will not be bothered while studying. Treat your education with the importance that you will treat your new career, and you’ll find yourself working with your license before you know it.
Access resources
If you’re returning to school after a period of time outside of the classroom, consider beefing up your basic skills to make sure you are up-to-date on any technology that will be used. If your computer knowledge is lacking, think about taking a quick course to refresh your skill set.
You’ll also want to be sure that you are accessing any available funding for your education. There are federal options for funding available, but your school may also have scholarship options that you are eligible for. Consider also looking around for funding that is specific to adult learners or those looking for a career change.
Enjoy the ride
Finally, the biggest thing you’ll want to remember before heading back to school for a cosmetology education is to be patient with yourself. If you’ve been out of school for years, it may be a bit of an adjustment to get back into the routine of school, so try not to put undue pressure on yourself, particularly when starting out. When you get to class, you’ll notice there are people of all ages and backgrounds – some starting out and some, like you, pursuing a career change – so don’t be intimidated by the fact that some fellow students may be straight out of high-school. Keep an open mind and allow yourself to have some fun with the process; there will be plenty of time to increase the pressure once your career is off the ground.
