If you enjoy creative work, cosmetology is the right field for you. Not only will it give you the chance to interact positively with customers, the field is wide open right now in West Virginia. Getting the skills you need to become a professional in this exciting industry are readily available, and the outlook for jobs has never been better.
The job outlook for cosmetologists is on an upswing. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, the field is expected to experience a higher growth rate than other professions in West Virginia. This is due to the rapid population rise in many areas of the state and a corresponding need for stylists. Adult populations such as the rapidly expanding baby boomer market are an absolute part of this increased need for cosmetologists. As members of this group look to remain stylish and take on a more youthful appearance, they turn to cosmetologists to get the job done.
Specialties Within the Field of Cosmetology
While two of the main specialties are barbers and stylists, the field is growing to meet the demand of customers who want to enhance their appearance from many perspectives. In fact, the number of skin care jobs has grown exponentially and these cosmetologists are found in spas and well-known department stores throughout the state.
In this speciality, skin care professionals or estheticians evaluate the way the customer’s skin is holding up to the constant ravages of environmental forces such as pollution and sun damage and set out to provide the skin with the care it needs to repair and rejuvenate. Pedicurists and manicurists are finding a large number of jobs to choose from whether in a nail salon or a spa, and the projected growth in these jobs is expected to escalate in the years ahead.
One exciting field for cosmetologists is the need for theatrical makeup artists. Many venues from dinner theaters to clubs are always looking for talented cosmetologists. Being part of the entertainment scene is exciting and fosters the growth of the artist’s creative skills. Pay is great too.
Keeping Your License Active in West Virginia
Once you’ve become licensed, it is necessary to keep your license active. After spending the time and energy going to school and honing your talent, it would not be wise to miss a licensing deadline. However, the rapid pace of a cosmetologist’s workload leaves little time to do this. That is why online cosmetology classes are a great way to stay current and save time.
License Renewal in West Virginia
License renewal is governed by the West Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. Licenses are renewed annually with the previous year’s license expiring on December 31 and the newly renewed license becoming active in January. This places the deadline for renewal on December 31. In order to renew, a candidate must have completed four hours of coursework. The continuing education course not only is required to renew your license, it also provides you with updates in the field of cosmetology and serves to keep you current in the advances this field makes all the time, letting you better serve your customers.
What You Need to Know When Selecting an Online CE Course

You can be certain that once you’ve spent the time to take the course, it is acceptable to the board to fulfill your requirement.
How It Works at Beauty Academy
It is easy to sign up for an online cosmetology class. You will be able to choose from two courses, each of which satisfies the continuing education requirement. Either course costs $29.00. All you need to do is click on the button labeled “start course.” The course will begin, but if you need to stop, you can halt the slides, and restart when you are free to do so. After pushing the resume course button, you will be back at the exact spot where you interrupted the slides.
In order to complete the course requirement, you must read through each slide. When the last slide is finished, you will receive notification that the course has been completed. You do not need to take an exam to satisfy the online cosmetology classes.
